My psychotherapeutic approaches with individuals and families are based on "Psychodynamic Therapy", and "Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy". Utilizing these therapies look at past experiences, interpersonal relationships, unconscious and conscious motivations, and present patterns of thinking and behaving. At the heart of both of theses systems is the belief that the consumer has within them all the resources needed to make change possible and the role of the counselor is to facilitate the consumer's ability to access those resources. When working with families and couples, I use an integrative approach drawing from the Structural, Experiential, and Attachment models of family and couples therapy. These are well established and respected therapies. You are encouraged to become knowledgeable about goals, methods, and effectiveness.
Counseling includes your active involvement as well as efforts to change your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. You will have to work both in and out of the counseling session. There are no instant, painless, or passive cures. Instead there may be homework assignments, exercises, writings, journal entries, role-plays, etc. Most likely, you will be challenged to work on relationships and make long-term efforts. Sometimes change will be easy and swift, but more often it will be slow and deliberate; effort may need to be repeated.
